• Mobile & Online Security

  • First Niagara Online and Mobile Banking offers security and convenience.

Here are some measures First Niagara takes to safeguard and protect your online and mobile banking sessions:

    • Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption technology is used to encrypt confidential information when transmitting over the Internet. This prevents anyone from intercepting and reading or altering secure information during transmission.
    • Secure login not only requires the use of a unique Login ID/password combination, but also requires a set of security questions and a security image to identify you and grant access to your accounts.
    • Auto logoff signs you out of the First Niagara banking system in the following scenarios:
      • After a period of inactivity during a session (Web browser or mobile app)
      • If the Web browser or the mobile app is closed
    • First Niagara Online and Mobile Banking access is suspended after too many failed attempts to log in. You must contact First Niagara to have your password reset to regain access to online and mobile banking functionality.
    • As a security measure to help protect your accounts, Login IDs and passwords are never stored on the mobile devices in the event your mobile device is lost or stolen.
    • We will not reveal your full account number; only account nicknames you’ve created or the last four digits of your accounts will be viewable within First Niagara Online and Mobile Banking.
    • On mobile devices, the recent apps view shows a masked screen when the First Niagara app is displayed.

For added protection, here are some steps you can take to ensure your security when you are online and on your mobile device:

    • Apply operating system and application updates (patches) regularly.
    • Ensure that anti-virus/spyware software is installed, functional, and is updated with the most current definitions from the software provider.
    • Have host-based firewall software installed on computers.
    • Use latest versions of Internet browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or Google Chrome with “pop-up” blockers and keep patches up to date.
    • Delete emails from sources that are unknown to you. Do not open or click on links or attachments within emails that you may have doubts about.
    • Always use secure passwords, using a combination of upper and lower case letters as well as numbers and, when possible, special characters. Try to avoid commonly available information that others may know or guess such as date of birth or names of family members or pets. The stronger the password, the more difficult it is for fraudsters to guess it.
    • Never share your password.
    • Make it a habit to log out of your mobile and online banking sessions when you are finished at home and especially when using a public PC.
    • Avoid storing personal or financial information on your laptop or mobile device.
    • Use First Niagara’s Online or Mobile Banking to monitor your account activity on a regular basis. Report any suspicious or unauthorized activity on your account immediately.
    • When making online purchases, make sure they're from a reputable company. To determine if your information is encrypted during transmission, make sure that the address line contains https and look for the locked padlock icon in the browser. Check the website domain (http://www.domain.com) in the address bar to verify it is displaying the correct website.
    • When banking online, make sure that the website address is your financial institution's official domain. For First Niagara, the login website in your browser address bar should begin with https://onlinebanking.firstniagara.com/
    • If the computer or mobile device that you use to conduct your banking is stolen, you should contact First Niagara. If it is your mobile device that is stolen, you should also contact your wireless carrier to report the incident.
    • Only download the First Niagara mobile app from trusted sources, such as the App Store℠ for Apple® mobile digital devices or the Google Play™ store for Android™ mobile digital devices.
